Personal Tax & Planning
Your business and personal taxes don’t live in separate worlds, especially when you work for yourself.
Whether you’re a sole trader or running a limited company, the decisions you make will affect the tax you pay personally. By looking at the whole picture ahead of time, we can help you understand your options, plan what comes next and make sure you’re not paying more tax than you need to.
What to Expect
Know what you're paying and when
No waiting until January to discover there’s a tax bill you hadn’t planned for. We’ll give you a clear picture of what’s due and when, as early as we reasonably can.
Advice while there's still time
The best time to think about tax isn’t after the year has ended. We’ll look ahead and raise things while you still have time to make a different decision or take action.
Understand your options
Salary, dividends, pensions, incorporation and allowances can all change the picture. We’ll explain the options that are relevant to you, what they mean in practice and where the trade-offs are.
Planning that fits your life
The lowest tax bill isn’t always the right answer. If you’re planning a mortgage, buying a home, making a big investment or simply want to take more money out of the business, that can change the advice. We’ll get to know what’s coming up for you and help you plan around it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who do you prepare Self Assessment tax returns for?
Our personal tax service is designed for people who run their own business, whether that’s as a sole trader or through a limited company.
Because we understand the business behind the numbers, we can look at your personal tax as part of the bigger picture rather than simply preparing a return once a year.
When will I know how much tax I have to pay?
As early as possible. We don’t believe in waiting until January to tell you what you owe.
Once we have the information we need, we’ll prepare your return and let you know what’s due and when. Filing your tax return early doesn’t mean you have to pay your tax early, so you’ll still have until the normal payment deadline to pay HMRC.
Can you help me decide whether to become a limited company?
Yes. There’s more to the decision than simply asking which structure produces the lowest tax bill.
We’ll look at your profits, how much money you need personally, your plans for the business and your wider circumstances, and help you understand whether incorporation makes sense for you.
Can you help me decide how to take money from my company?
Yes. Salary and dividends aren’t decisions that should simply be repeated year after year.
We’ll look at your company and personal position together, along with what you’re trying to achieve, and help you decide what makes sense for you.
What if I have something big coming up personally?
Tell us. And tell us well before it happens! Buying a house, applying for a mortgage, making a large investment, planning for retirement or expecting a change in your income can all affect the advice we give you. The lowest tax bill isn’t always the best answer, so the more we know about what’s coming up, the better we can help you plan for it.
Let’s make your tax bill boring.
No nasty surprises, no last-minute calculations and no wondering whether you could have done things differently. We’ll help you plan ahead, know what’s coming and make the most of the options available to you.
